FAQ
1. What is a PAC (Political Action Committee)?
A PAC (Political Action Committee) is a group established to collected contributions from its members and use that pool of funds to help elect candidates.
2. Why should I support Maiv PAC?
In the past, candidates who have ran a campaign and have been elected into office because of the Hmong community vote could not be held accountable for their words. Especially when they’re making decisions on policies that affect the Hmong community. Maiv PAC exists to make sure that our community and member’s funds and vote do not get taken for granted. The PAC has screening process that takes place before we endorse (give money & access to our members) a candidate.
3. What will Maiv PAC do for me and the issues I am concerned about?
Maiv PAC focuses on 3 Hmong women’s and children’s issues. These issues are:
Economic Security - paid leave, affordable childcare (culturally appropriate), minimum Wage (poverty), small business creation and support
Healthcare - Access, preventative care, health coverage, reproductive, mental health
Education - this includes early childhood (0-3), the pre-k to high school (4-18) and post secondary system.
Our members contribute to Maiv PAC because of our accountability process with candidates. Our individual voice in making contributions to a candidate matters but it’s stronger and more effective to have a collective voice. Our members who contribute to the PAC align with the issues Maiv PAC focuses on and would much rather be connected to a collective voice to have their money and civic duties go towards a candidate who is conscious about our concerns when they’re making decisions on policies.
4. Why doesn’t Maiv PAC collaborate with other organizations?
Legally, we cannot. If we do any type of partnership or work with organizations, we become affiliated and have to apply for a different designation. That means a nonprofit status that requires a board, tax filings, etc. Our only purpose is to give money to candidates who support our values. Not causes, programs, initiatives, or specific events. Should that change in the future, we will need to set up a different branch of our organization with a different nonprofit status.
